December 2010
Sabaydii,
We are very pleased to see so much progress in the past year. First, thank you. The work of the Center for Lao Studies (CLS) would not be possible without the dedicated supporters who have given so generously their time, talent, and treasures in 2010. As we move into 2011 and celebrate our 5th year anniversary since our founding, your support is even more critical in order to sustain our work and continue many of the important programs.
The Center for Lao Studies depends on support from individuals like you who see value in promoting and advancing the field of Lao Studies through research, education, conferences, cultural and study abroad exchange programs. We ask that you show how much you value the work of CLS by making a gift today. Whether it is our basic one-year CLS membership at $10 or a $1,000 contribution, no amount of gift is too small.
Your generous support enables us to accomplish notable achievements in 2010, while looking forward to sustaining and adding to our existing success in 2011. Here are some of our highlights:
After the successful Third International Conference on Lao Studies (ICLS), co-hosted with Khon Kaen University in Thailand ( http://www.laostudies.org/conferences ) that attracted over 300 participants and over 130 presentations from around the world, we are planning for the Fourth International Conference on Lao Studies in 2013, which will take place at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Our annual Summer Study Abroad in Laos (SAIL) will see its third group of students head to Laos this upcoming summer. In cooperation with the Lao-American College in Vientiane, SAIL allows participants to experience the language and culture of Laos firsthand. Please look for announcements about the SAIL program in the coming weeks. To read the previous years blog, please visit: http://www.laostudies.org/sailersblog
The Journal of Lao Studies (JLS) has published its first issue earlier in 2010. We are expecting the second and third issues by the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011. This is an exciting occasion for those of us involved with Lao Studies. With a well edited and peer reviewed journal of our own, we can now highlight the terrific research and writing done by scholars in the field of Lao Studies around the world. The current issue is available for free at: http://www.laostudies.org/journal Establishing the Lao Oral History Project (LOHA). This project documents and archives the untold stories of Lao refugees in the United States. Currently, there are almost no existing oral history projects and little academic research that focuses on the ethnic Lao refugees in the US. By raising awareness of the Lao refugee experience, CLS will advance the growing field of Lao Studies, as well as illuminate the realities that this population faces today. CLS started the project in 2010 and will continue to improve the project in 2011. Please visit the LOHA website at: http://www.laostudies.org/loha
Together with the Lao Heritage Foundation and the Laotian American National Alliance, CLS will co-host the Third International Lao New Year Festival in April of 2011 at the San Francisco City Hall Civic Center. In the past, the event has attracted over 15,000 attendees far and wide. For more information, please visit: http://www.laonewyear.com
Please help us launch 2011 in strength, and continue to promote the spirit of Lao Studies! With your help we will be able to meet the 2011 first quarter membership goal of 250 new members and fundraising goal of $25,000.
There are three ways to support CLS: 1. CLS Annual Membership (our basic level is only $10); 2. One-Time Gift; and 3. Monthly Pledge. For our American donors, this is a last chance to make a tax-deductible gift and count it against this year's taxes. We appreciate your support and wish you all the best in this holiday season.
Sincerely,
Gregory Green Vinya Sysamouth, Ph.D. CLS Board Chair CLS Executive Director
